Party time

I had a party tonight for my class. It was a good time. It’s interesting how much credit people expect me to take for my place. My parents supplied and continue to supply me with everything I need. I so rarely let them know how important it is to me, and not just when I’ve been complemented all night on how sick my place is.

I forget that of the people my age, on Earth, I’m easily in the 99.99% percentile in ease of lifestyle. I’ve never been asked to work and have never been expected to put my share in to support the family. I feel as if one (or possibly both) of my parents feel their children are leeches, but they offer and we accept. As I just mentioned however, we so rarely let them know how nice we have it.

It’s both a moment of insight and yet a solemn truth that I realized today the person I am in an academic setting is not who I am externally to such an environment. In school, I am nervous, anxious, and generally appear unhappy – 3 personality traits favored by hermits rather than 20-something medical students.

At the bars, I find myself extremely outgoing. In fact, I’m the one whose the life of the party. I am the one dancing, where the rest of the students are not. I get the party started so to speak.

Unfortunately for me, finding a possible common ground between both sets of experiential-based traits is a difficult thing indeed. I don’t see myself being the life of the class in class. Maybe that’s how it should be, or maybe that’s how it has to be for me?

I think it’s interesting that none of the material I’ve come across in med school has been difficult. It’s a fabrication of the medical community to proclaim that the subject of medicine is inherently difficult. It seems to me (in my limited knowledge of the subject thus far) that med school isn’t a test of intelligence. Rather, it’s a test of regurgitation of material.

Anecdotally, the MCAT is a test of intelligence and not pure rote memorization. I wonder if that was meant?

New section of material. Here we go. First section down, there we went.

Anatomy is tough. The other classes are not. What’s interesting is that I’ve always found myself readily capable of memorizing anything thrown at me. Rote memorization it seems is not enough to master anatomy. An ability to conquer relationships as well as regurgitation it seems is important. Lower grades than I would have hoped, but past students of these courses have all told me first section exams are the worst. Section exams will get better.

Hopefully they are correct, and I don’t find myself repeating anatomy next semester.
